Why your personality matters more than perfect headshot poses

If you’ve ever stood in front of a camera and thought, “What do I even do with my face?” — welcome to the club. Almost every client I work with arrives with the same worry: “I’m not good at posing.”

Here’s the truth about headshot poses that might just save your sanity:

Your personality will always outperform a perfect pose. Every. Single. Time.

Whether you’re booking headshots in Manchester or Cheshire, or a full personal branding photography session, the magic isn’t in your chin angle or the specific position of your elbows. It’s in how you feel and how authentically you show up.

Let’s get into why your personality is your real power.

If you’re currently researching Manchester headshot photographers, you can explore more guidance on my Headshots in Manchester page.

Perfect Headshot poses Don’t Build Trust — Your Personality Does

Your ideal clients don’t want to see a stiff, overly-polished version of you; they want real. They’re interested in your expertise, your confidence, your warmth, your humour — whatever your personality brings to your business.

Perfect headshot poses might look nice on camera, but a headshot infused with personality is what makes people genuinely want to work with you.

That’s the difference between a technically perfect portrait and headshots that convert.

When someone lands on your website or LinkedIn profile, they’re not thinking:

“Hmm… impeccable elbow positioning.” They’re thinking: “Do I feel like I could trust this person?” “Do they look approachable?” “Do they seem like someone I’d want to work with?”

Your personality shining through in your headshot photo answers those questions before they read a single word of your bio.

Brand Personality Creates Connection (And Connection Sells)

In both headshots Manchester and longer personal branding photography sessions, your personality is what humanises your brand.

A genuine laugh, a warm smile and the calm confidence in your posture. These micro-moments are gold because they make people feel something.

People don’t want to hire robots. They want to work with people they feel a connection with.

So instead of asking yourself “What’s the most flattering pose?” try: “What energy do I want people to feel when they see this photo?”

That mind shift changes everything and makes your headshot shoot enjoyable rather than a worry.

The Problem With “Perfect” headshot poses

Trying to nail a perfect pose often creates the exact opposite of what you want:

  • You freeze up
  • You overthink
  • You hold your breath
  • You lose your natural expression
  • You look uncomfortable (because you are uncomfortable)

Aiming for perfect headshot poses can make you look staged, stiff, or disconnected. None of that helps you to relax and enjoy your headshot shoot.

As a Manchester headshot photographer, this is why I work with clients to ditch the pressure of posing and lean into personality instead. When you’re relaxed and supported, and not trying to “perform,” your real self shows up — and trust me, that’s the version your audience responds to.

How I Help You Look Natural On Camera (Even If You Hate Being Photographed)

Let’s be honest, you’re unlikely to come your headshot or personal brand shoot with previous modelling experience! So I’m here to be your cheerleader and give you all the encouragement and support you need to look and feel your best.

We’ll chat throughout the shoot to keep things informal and relaxed, and we’ll start with simple directions to help you ease into it.

Rather than micro-managing every little pose, I’ll give you prompts to help you achieve the look we’re going for. I often demonstrate poses myself, so you can visualise what we’re going for without a lengthy explanation.

When you’re relaxed enough to forget the camera’s even there, you begin to show your natural personality and the images level up dramatically. It’s often the “in-between” moments such as a genuine laugh after a joke that become some of the strongest shots of the entire session.

How to Bring Your Personality Into Your Headshots

Here are a few simple tips to show up authentically at your headshots photo shoot:

1. Wear clothes you feel like yourself in. Not what you “should” wear — what you love and feel confident in.

2. Shake it out! Walking, talking, laughing — movement creates natural expressions.

3. Think about your ideal client. Imagine your ideal client. What version of you do they need to see?

4. Let go of the pressure to perform. Your headshot photographer will guide you. You are not expected to know what to do.

5. Let your expressions flow. Be playful, experiment, and let your natural expressions lead the way.

Your Personality Is your Brand

The biggest secret to unlock? You don’t need to act like you know what you’re doing. You already embody your brand every day.  Great headshots simply capture the energy and passion you bring to your business already.

An experienced headshot photographer helps you tap into this, so your images feel authentic, honest, and aligned with your business ethos and goals.

When you’re looking for a Manchester or Cheshire headshot photographer, remember:

Perfect poses don’t convert. Personality does.

You don’t need to know how to pose. You just need to show up as yourself, and I’ll take care of the rest.
