Ideas for an adventurous personal branding shoot

I often get weird and wonderful ideas for an adventurous personal branding shoot when I’m out and about. I can be struck by inspiration in a new location, and I think about which of my clients might be a good fit for a brand shoot there.

Personal branding photography that reflects your adventurous spirit can make a powerful statement about who you are and what you stand for. An image can tell a thousand words about you as a person and can communicate in a nutshell what you’re all about.

Whilst we’ve all seen a million headshots against boring white backdrops (yawn!), more unusual locations are sure to catch the eye and capture the imagination. Strong visual imagery can make all the difference when you’re looking to stand out in a crowded market.

The sky is the limit to what you can achieve for your personal branding photos once you open your mind to an adventurous shoot. All it takes is your imagination, planning, time, and let’s be up-front… some extra budget! I think it’s well worth going that extra mile to create something special and unique to you and your brand.

Ideas for adventurous personal branding shoots

Here are seven ideas for adventurous personal branding shoot concepts, tailored to different vocations with some suggestions for locations…

1. Mountain Explorer

Ideal for: Life coaches, therapists, leadership consultants, personal trainers, outdoor brand founders, authors of transformational/self-help books.

Why it works: Capturing you amidst rugged peaks and hiking trails symbolises resilience, overcoming adversity, freedom and a journey of personal growth. This theme is perfect for those guiding others through their own transformative paths.

Potential locations: Peak District, Yorkshire Moors, Lake District

2. Urban Creative

Ideal for: Creative directors, technology entrepreneurs, fashion stylists, web designers, architects.

Why it works: An urban backdrop reflects innovation and a modern edge, aligning with professionals navigating fast-paced industries. Centring yourself in a city also shows a connection to where you work. Your shoot can be tailored to show the modern, shiny edge of a city or a more gritty, alternative feel. Or combine both for two different looks to your headshots.

Potential locations: Northern Quarter, Castlefield, Ancoats or Spinningfields in Manchester. Other cities are also available!

3. Desert Wanderer

Ideal for: Spiritual coaches, yoga teachers, wellness brand founders, musicians

Why it works: The vastness of the sand evokes introspection and a connection to your spiritual side, resonating with those working in the fields of mindfulness and holistic well-being. Whilst we don’t have deserts in the UK, sand dunes can provide a similar backdrop and look especially evocative at sunset.

Potential locations: Formby beach

4. Water Adventurer

Ideal for: Wellness coaches, personal trainers, therapists, sustainability consultants, travel content creators.

Why it works: Water symbolises calmness and emotional depth, aligning with professions centred on healing and growth. Or it may be that you directly work with water in some way as part of your business… Either way, lakes and rivers are a great choice of backdrop – or why not go one step further and go for a dip?!

5. Nomadic Creative

Ideal for: Travel vloggers, digital nomads, creative entrepreneurs, van-lifers

Why it works: Showcasing a mobile lifestyle highlights freedom and passion-led work, resonating with audiences inspired by unconventional paths. You can use the freedom of travelling around to combine other elements of adventure, such as a visit to a beach or parking up at a mountainside.

Potential locations: Anywhere you choose!

6. Arctic Minimalist

Ideal for: Tech consultants and entrepreneurs, luxury skincare brand founders, productivity experts.

Why it works: A stark, icy landscape is visually stunning and conveys clarity and focus, ideal for high-end brands emphasising simplicity and style. A shoot like this would require some careful planning but the shots would be well worth it!

Potential locations: Iceland
