How to choose the right personal branding photographer

We can all agree that high-quality personal brand photographs are a must for putting your best foot forward online. Whether you’re a freelancer, a creative or an entrepreneur, having a strong personal brand will set you apart in an increasingly crowed market.

But where do you start when it comes to selecting the right brand photographer for the job? You may have noticed there is lots of choice out there. Brand photographers offer different styles, vibes and specialities at various price points.

So how do you choose the right personal branding photographer? Here are my top tips to help you find the perfect match…

1. Define Your Brand

Before you even think about looking for a photographer, it’s crucial to have a clear understanding of what your brand is all about. Plus, what are you looking to get out of your personal branding shoot?

It’s worth spending some quality time thinking this through. And you may want to check out How to prepare for a personal branding photography shoot to mull this over in more detail. You should ask yourself…

  • What is the vibe of my brand?
  • Who is my target audience?
  • What thoughts and emotions do I want my brand photos to evoke?
  • What is the message I want to convey to my ideal clients?

You may want to start gathering your ideas into a mood board. Having well-defined brand goals and ideas will help you communicate your vision so that your photographer understands your needs from the get-go.

2. Research Photographer Portfolios

Do some Google searches for personal branding photographers near you, or take a dive through Instagram portfolios. You could also look at your peers and competitors personal branding photos to see who took theirs.

Look out for photographers who specialise in personal branding photography as they will have the best understanding of this type of shoot.

  • Photography style: Are their photos classic, modern, cool or creative? Are they taken on location or in a studio? Do you like their aesthetic and does it align with your brand vibe? (I personally offer colourful and creative personal branding images, which my clients love. But it might not be everyone’s cup of tea!)
  • Subjects: Does the brand photographer work with people of different ages, genders and races? Do their clients look comfortable and at ease in the images? Can you picture yourself as this photographer’s next client?
  • Quality: Are the headshot photos high-quality? Look out for good lighting, creative and flattering composition, and consistent editing style.
  • Professionalism: How long has this branding photographer been established? Have they got recent work online?

A strong portfolio and a good social media presence is a good indicator of the photographer’s skills, style and professionalism. You should also do more research to ensure they are right for you…

3. Read Reviews

Client testimonials shared on social media and Google reviews can provide valuable insights before you book your brand photographer. Look out for client feedback about…

  • Communication with clients: Was the photographer easy to work with and did they listen to the clients needs and ideas?
  • Client Experience: Did they feel comfortable during their shoot?
  • Finished Images: Were the clients happy with their final photos? Don’t forget to look at the images too!

Positive reviews from happy clients can give you confidence before you book your shoot. You could even pop a message to previous clients of your shortlisted photographers to find out more about their experiences. Or even better, look out for word of mouth recommendations from your peers.

4. Make Contact

Once you’ve chosen a photographer (or two!), it’s time to get in touch to find out more about their brand photography services and prices . When you make your enquiry, don’t forget to provide them with key information about your brand (including dropping links to your website and socials). You should also discuss…

  • Your Vision: Share your branding goals and ideas for your shoot, including any mood boards you’ve been working on. Your ideal photographer will be keen to make your vision come to life!
  • Practical Considerations: Get photography prices up front and discuss the location(s) and timings for your shoot, including when you need the photos delivered by.

A professional personal branding photographer will guide you through the process seamlessly, making you feel at ease from the start. I offer video consultations with my signature package clients, so we can get to know each other and discuss the project in detail.

6. Get Ready to Collaborate

Working with a personal brand photographer is a collaborative experience, so before you make your final commitment consider the following…

  • Comfort Level: Do you feel comfortable and at ease with the photographer? Can you trust their process, suggestions and ideas?
  • Creativity: Are they able to bring creative ideas to the table? Are you liking the poses, locations, and creative concepts that they have suggested?

The art of creative collaboration: teamwork makes the dream work!

7. Final Checks

Before you hand over your hard-earned cash for your headshots shoot, here are a few final things to check…

  • Number of Images: How many edited photos will you receive, as an estimate?
  • Rights & Usage: What are the rights and usage terms for the photos? Do you need to credit the photographer when you use the images?
  • Editing & Retouching: What level of image editing and retouching is included? Can you request additional edits if required?

The most important thing is to find a headshot photographer who makes you feel comfortable. Someone who ‘gets’ your vision and ideas. And someone who you feel you can trust to get the very best out of your personal branding photo shoot. Any questions? Pop me a message to find out more about what I can offer for your personal branding photographs.
